Baseball Earns Saturday Split

The Warriors avoid sweep with a 7-3 game three victory.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After dropping the series opener on Thursday in Detroit, the Wayne State University baseball team (27-11, 15-7 GLIAC) the Warriors split Saturday's doubleheader at Ohio Dominican (22-10, 12-10 GLIAC). The Panthers took game one, 4-3, in eight innings while WSU avoided the sweep with a 7-3 game two victory.

WSU also avoided matching a season-long three-game losing streak.

Game One (L, 3-4 / Eight Innings)
Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) was impressive going 6 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Zach Johnson (Grandville, Mich.) connected for a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the second inning to give the Green & Gold a 1-0 advantage.

The Warriors doubled their lead with a run after back-to-back singles from Zimmerman and Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) and an ODU throwing error. Johnson drove in another run with another sacrifice fly to plate the inning's second run.

The Panthers began the bottom of the fifth inning with a double and a single and scored a run on a 5-4-3 groundball double play to trim WSU's lead to 3-1.

Following a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning, head coach Ryan Kelley elected to go with his closer to try to secure the final two outs. Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood) (2-2) collected the second out but ODU tied the game, 3-3, with back-to-back base hits.

The Warriors applied some pressure on the top of the eighth inning following a leadoff single from Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) but were unable to score the go-ahead run.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Jossue Delgado singled and stole second before Ruch issued a four-pitch walk. The Panthers' catcher Kyle Tisdale delivered a walk-off RBI single into left field to give ODU the 4-3 victory.

Game Two (W, 7-3)
Zimmerman gave WSU a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of the first inning after an ODU fielding error. Carrell drove in the second run of the game with an RBI single to right field in the top of the second inning.

Johnson extended the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single through the left side in the top of the third inning.

ODU scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the third inning to pull within a run, 3-2.

Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) hammered his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to left field in the top of the fourth inning to give the Warriors a 5-2 lead.

The Panthers began the bottom of the fourth inning with a double into left field but starter Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (6-1) was able to prevent a rally, retiring the next three batters in order.

Carrell added insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning with a two-run single into center field to give the Warriors a 7-3 lead. Carrell finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) replaced Kinch after the first two batters reached to begin the bottom of the seventh inning. The left-hander collected two outs before David Frederick (Rockford, Mich. / Northview) ended the game with a strikeout.

Kinch went six innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits while walking three with three punchouts.
