Volleyball Wins in Straight Sets at GVSU

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (13-11 overall, 8-5 GLIAC) made it a weekend sweep of the west-side of the state by besting Grand Valley State (12-12 overall, 5-8 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon in three sets.  The Warriors took the first set 25-20 before winning a thrilling 31-29 second set and completed the sweep with a 25-22 triumph in the third set.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) gave WSU an early 6-2 lead in the opening set.  After the Lakers pulled within one, the Green & Gold responded with back-to-back points, including kills from Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.) and Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron), giving the visitors an 11-8 advantage.  Fike and Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) paired up for a block to make it 17-13 in favor of the Warriors.  A service ace from Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) pushed Wayne State within two points of winning and a GVSU service error gave WSU a 25-20 victory.

Wayne State led 5-1 to begin the second set after a kill from Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central).  The back-and-forth set was tied at 9-9 and 11-11 before the Warriors opened up a 15-13 lead on a point from Frazee.  Back-to-back kills from Fike extended the margin to 20-17 and another point from Richardson made it 23-21, Warriors.  However, the Lakers tied the set at 25-25 and 28-28 before taking a 29-28 lead.  Three straight points by the Warriors, including kills from Fike, Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and Frazee gave WSU a 31-29 win and a 2-0 match lead.

Grand Valley State led 4-1 to open the third set and held onto a 9-6 lead before the Warriors took a 15-9 lead following a 9-0 run.  A block from Krenz and Frazee plus a kill from Krenz made it 20-12 as the Green & Gold would go on to win 25-22.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Richardson posted her second consecutive match with 19 kills, while Fike finished with 10.  Duffield dished out 45 assists and Rodriguez led the defense with 19 digs.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH KOTH
"This was another nice road performance by the Warriors today.  We had a balanced offensive attack, and kept pressure on GVSU from the service line right from the start.  It was a nice way to complete the weekend."
