NCAA DII #18 Wayne State Takes Two From Malone

The Malone University softball team lost a pair of home games to NCAA Division II #18 and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent Wayne State University (MI) by the final scores of 13-0 and 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers will travel to Ashland, Ohio to face Ashland University on March 29th. The first game is slated to start at 3:30 p.m.

Game One:
Pitcher Lyndsay Butler threw a perfect game for the Warriors in the opener. Butler retired all 18 batters she faced, striking out 12 without a base runner.

Malone held their own against Wayne State to start the game as the Warriors only lead 2-0 going into the top of the fifth inning.

However, Wayne State went on a scoring spree notching two runs in the fifth inning and nine runs in the sixth inning to secure the 13-0 victory.

Game Two:
Wayne State scored first with a two-run home run to take an early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, designated player Abbie Hughes registered a double to center field to get Malone on the bases. Later in the inning, pinch hitter Juliana Shultes brought in Hughes off of a single to right field, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Warriors scored two runs to extend their lead to 4-1.

Malone gave great effort in the top of the seventh inning, but it wouldn't be enough as the Warriors sealed their second win on the day.

Hughes went 1-for-3 at the plate, tallied one run scored and collected her second double of the season.

Ashley Beck went 1-for-2 at the plate and notched her second double of the season.

Juliana Shultes went 1-for-1 at the plate and generated her third RBI of the season.
