Baseball Sweeps Friday Doubleheader

Wayne State captured game one 11-8 and won game two 9-1 against Saint Michael's in Florida.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (6-7) won both games of a doubleheader against Saint Michael's (0-2) as play continued in the RussMatt Invitational on Friday.  The Warriors out-slugged SMC in game one to win 11-8, while a trio of pitchers headlined by Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (2-2) shut down the Purple Knights in game two, 9-1.

GAME ONE vs. SAINT MICHAEL'S (W, 11-8)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) tripled to right field to begin the scoring in the bottom of the first inning.  The next batter, Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) followed with a double to left center to give the Warriors 2-0 advantage after one inning of play.  SMC tied the game with two runs on two hits in the the top of the third inning.  Back-to-back doubles including a two-run double from Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) led to five runs for WSU in the bottom of the third inning.

- The Knights homered to lead off the top of the fourth inning to trim the deficit to 7-3.  SMC added three more runs in the inning to pull within a run, 7-6, helped by a WSU fielding error.  However, the Warriors regained control with four runs on five hits and a St. Michael's error to take an 11-6 lead.  SMC added runs in the fifth and sixth innings but it would not be enough as the Green & Gold won its second straight contest.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Harms and JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) both posted three-hit games, while Harms, Kelly and Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) all collected multiple-RBI performances.

ON THE MOUND
- Starter Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (2-0) earned the win despite allowing five earned runs in four innings.  He walks three batters and struck out three.
- D.J. Zezula made his second appearance of the spring and allowed a run in two innings of work.
- Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) tossed a scoreless inning to earn his first career save.

GAME TWO vs. SAINT MICHAEL'S (W, 9-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Wayne State did not waste any time in asserting its will in game two, scoring four runs on three hits and a SMC error in the first inning.  Kelly, Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) and Randy Kuzdak (Redford, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) all collected RBI in the rally.  The offense kept rolling in the top of the second inning on another RBI single from Kelly to put WSU on top 5-0.  Carrell, Baldwin and Kelly added three more runs in the top of third inning with RBI singles, extending the lead to 8-0.

-  Kinch was able to face the minimum in the second and third innings with consecutive inning-ending double plays.  He kept the Knights quiet until the bottom of fifth inning when back-to-back doubles put SMC on the board.  Kelly drove in his fourth run of the game with an RBI double into right center to complete the scoring for both teams.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Kelly continued his solid start to his freshman season, going 4-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.
- Carrell, Baldwin both posted two-hit games while driving in a run each.

ON THE MOUND
- Kinch turned in his second straight gem, going five innings and striking out four, while allowing one earned run on four hits.
- Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) and Harms pitched scoreless innings in relief.

UP NEXT
