Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Wins Rain-Halted Contest 10-0; Drops Both Games Of Regularly-Scheduled Doubleheader

The Malone University baseball team tallied a 1-2 record on Saturday during its three home contests against Ohio Dominican University.

The Pioneers opened their busy day by capturing a 10-0 victory in the completion of a rain-halted contest from Thursday.  The Panthers then swept both games of the regularly-scheduled twinbill between the two squads, winning game one 2-0 and the final by a score of 11-3

Malone's record moved to 15-12 overall and 6-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference following Saturday's action while Ohio Dominican improved to 12-11 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

The two squads will conclude their four-game series on Monday at Thurman Munson Stadium with a nine-inning contest starting at 12:00 p.m.

Game One Recap
Malone and ODU completed the first three innings of the contest on Thursday before heavy rain halted the game before the start of the fourth inning.  The Pioneers, who led 2-0 when the game was stopped on Thursday, plated four runs in the both the fifth and sixth innings to secure the 10-0 victory.

Designated hitter Matt Davis gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Thursday with a two-out, two-run double.  He then brought home three more runs in the fifth inning on Saturday with a three-run double to left.

Shortstop Richie Mast made the score 8-0 in the sixth with a two-run single to center.  Catcher Hayden Mobley added an RBI single later in the frame before Davis plated his sixth run of the game by drawing a bases-loaded walk.

Pioneer hurlers Tyler Whitlatch, Joe Costello and Gary Lawrence combined to shutout the Panthers on just two hits.  Whitlatch tossed the first three innings on Thursday.  Costello earned the win (4-1) with three scoreless frames on Saturday before Lawrence closed things out, retiring all three batters he faced in the seventh.

Malone registered eight hits in the contest.  In addition to Davis' two doubles, second baseman Austin Pachan recorded a pair of singles with two runs scored.

Game Two Recap
Ohio Dominican pitchers Joe Filosa and Vince Bartolone combined to shutout the Pioneers for the first time this season.

The Panthers' two runs came in the second with the help of a Malone fielding error, an RBI double, a wild pitch and a balk.

Right-hander Joshua Hurford was saddled with the loss (3-2) despite allowing just the two unearned runs on two hits over the first 6.1 innings.

Filosa worked the first 5.2 frames for ODU to pick up the win (2-1).  Malone loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh before Bartolone escaped trouble, earning his second save of the year by inducing a fielder's choice groundout.

Game Three Recap
The Panthers broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the third inning of the finale.  The score then remained at 3-0 until the top of the eighth when ODU broke the game open with a seven-run outburst.

Malone got on the scoreboard with an RBI groundout by third baseman Jon Crank in the bottom of the eighth.  Pachan and Mast would add RBI groundouts in the bottom of the ninth to account for the Pioneers' three runs.

Ryan Colegate earned the win for ODU (4-1) after tossing the first 7.2 innings, yielding one run on three hits.  Seven different pitchers appeared in the game for Malone.

Centerfielder Brenden Wells ripped a pair of singles to account for two of the Pioneers' six hits in the finale.
