The Malone University baseball team wrapped up its four-game series with Lake Erie College on Monday, posting a 6-2 victory in the opener before falling 12-4 in the finale.
The Pioneers moved to 14-10 overall and 5-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference following Monday's games while the Storm's record now stands at 9-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
Malone will continue GLIAC play at home later this week as the squad hosts a four-game series against Ohio Dominican University. The two squads will play a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday followed by another 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
Game One RecapA pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning allowed Lake Erie to grab the early lead in the opener. Malone fought back with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Leftfielder
Ryan Froman got things started with a two-run single to left. Centerfielder
Brenden Wells then came through with a two-out, two-run double to right-centerfield later in the frame to increase Malone's lead to 5-2.
The Pioneers tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and the six runs would prove to be more than enough for right-handed starting pitcher
Joe Costello. The junior went the distance on the mound for the Pioneers, improving to 3-1 on the season after surrendering just the two unearned runs on five hits over his seven innings of work.
Game Two RecapLike in the first game of the day, the Storm jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Malone struck back in the bottom of the frame, plating three runs on four hits. Wells led off the inning with a double and then came around to score on third baseman
Jon Crank's RBI single. Catcher
Hayden Mobley and rightfielder
Matt Wheeler later added RBI doubles to put the hosts in front.
The Storm tied the game up with an unearned run in the second. The contest would then remain knotted at 3-3 until Lake Erie pulled ahead with two runs in the sixth. The Storm tacked on two more runs in the seventh before taking command with a five-run outburst in the eighth.
Wells tallied four of Malone's 10 hits in the finale while scoring twice. Crank drove in a pair of runs, registering a sacrifice fly in the ninth to go with his RBI single in the first.
