DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (10-2 overall, 9-0 GLIAC) extended its school record winning streak (to start league play) to nine with a convincing 90-56 triumph over visiting Saginaw Valley State University (6-6 overall, 4-5 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.

Just three times prior to this year, a WSU basketball squad had started the conference portion of its schedule 7-0 (2010-11, 1986-87 - both in the GLIAC; and 1964-65 in the President's Athletic Conference).

There were five lead changes in the first eight minutes before a pair of free throws by junior forward Jamar Ragland () gave the Warriors a 9-8 lead at the 12:16 mark.  Ragland's trip to the charity stripe came after a triple by Cardinal Chris Webb had given the guests an 8-7 advantage.

Ragland's two foul shots ignited a 12-4 WSU run over the next 4:30 which gave the Wayne State a 19-12 lead.  Four different Warriors scored during the spurt including five by junior guard Mike Hollingsworth (Utica, Mich.) with the run concluding on a Cole Prophet (Sandusky, Ohio) three-pointer, his first of two in the opening half.

Senior forward Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) drained a pair of triples, sandwiched around another shot from beyond the arc by Webb, to push the Wayne State margin to 10 (25-15).

WSU's largest lead of the half came just before intermission as Hollingsworth connected from downtown with three seconds left on the clock.

Wayne State shot 52 percent (13-of-25) from the floor in the first half, including 56 percent (5-of-9) from beyond the arc.  Meanwhile, SVSU shot 30 percent (7-of-23) leading to the Warriors 38-25 lead at halftime.  Larkin totaled a game-high 11 points in the first half on 4-6 field goals (2-2 3-PT) and one made free throw.

Two Larkin triples just 75 seconds apart early in the second half increased the WSU lead to 17 (46-29).  Over the next four minutes, the Warriors went on a 16-6 run to open up a 27-point advantage (62-35) with just under 13 minutes remaining.  The margin was never less than 25 the rest of the way.

WSU shot 62 percent (18-of-29) from the field after intermission and had just one turnover while outscoring the Cardinals 52-31 over the final 20 minutes.

Larkin made 9-of-12 field goal attempts including 4-of-4 from beyond the arc in scoring a game-high and career-best 25 points.  He also had a team-best eight rebounds.

Hollingsworth added 14 points while junior guard Chene Phillips (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) and Prophet contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Both Phillips and Prophet garnered five assists as WSU totaled 17 assists to six turnovers.

Webb led SVSU with 17 points and four assists while Rob Clark grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Wayne State had a 22-2 edge in points off turnovers.

The Warriors begin a three-game road trip with a Thursday contest at Michigan Tech.
