Men's Tennis Earns 4-3 Win over Grand Valley State in Final Home Match of the Season

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's tennis team earned its first victory of the season with a 4-3 match win over the Grand Valley State Lakers on Saturday, April 17 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match in the Student Activity Center in Sault Ste Marie, Mich. With one regular season match remaining on the schedule, the Lakers hold a 1-7 overall record and a 1-5 record in conference play.

With a strong doubles performance, the Lake Superior State Lakers took the doubles point after winning all three matches. Each of LSSU's pairs (Kantola/Rehan, Sahibzada/Vicent Navarro, Penz/Pinnoo) won their match by a score of 6-3. 

The home team would build on the doubles victory during the singles matches, winning three of the six matches played. The LSSU Lakers top three singles players won their matches against Grand Valley. 

Juho Kantola, playing in the top singles spot for the Lakers, won his match handily as he posted scores of 6-2 and 6-0 over his GVSU opponent. In the No. 2 singles match, Xavier Vicent Navarro recorded a three-set win. Vicent Navarro took the opening set by a score of 6-3 and would post a 6-4 win in the decisive third set for the match win. As the fourth singles match to finish, Vicent Navarro's win clinched the LSSU Lakers victory. 

Krishan Taneja, LSSU's No. 3 singles player, also recorded a two-set win against GVSU. Taneja posted scores of 6-2 and 6-4. 

Ali Sahibzada retired from his match in the third set due to injury, giving the GVSU Laker the win. Sahibzada won the opening set 6-4, dropped the second set 6-0, and was trailing 5-3 in the third set before his retirement from the No. 4 singles match. 

The final two singles matches were both competitive as Harris Rehan dropped his match in a tiebreaker third set and Seth Pinnoo, playing in his final home match as a Laker, fell in two sets. Pinnoo was defeated by a tiebreaker in the first set.

Looking Ahead

Lake Superior State will close out the regular season of GLIAC play on Monday, April 19 at the Gates Tennis Center in Houghton, Mich. against the Michigan Tech Huskies. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
