Grand Valley State dropped its season opener at Bellarmine, 2-1, in double overtime Saturday evening matchup. GVSU will play #3-ranked Columbus State on Monday (Sept, 4) at 10 a.m., in Louisville, Ky.

Gabriella Mencotti in the middle of the box. From there, Mencotti rocketed a shot over the head of the Bellarmine goalkeeper to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
The Knights were able to tie the game up on a penalty kick at 84:33 minute mark of the second stanza when a Laker defender received a handball foul in the box. Goalkeeper
Jennifer Steinaway made the initial save, but Bellarmine was quick to tap the rebound in to tie the game at 1-1.
After 90 minutes of play and one overtime period, the teams were tied and headed to a second overtime. The Knights would score on a breakaway goal with two minutes left to defeat the Lakers 2-1.
Steinaway tallied five saves, while Mencotti tallied the Lakers' only goal. Schoolman tallied her first career point with an assist.
