Men's Hoops Drops Third Overtime Game Of The Season, 71-67

Toma and Bishop combined for 36 points.

DETROIT – The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (3-15 overall, 3-12 GLIAC) suffered its third overtime setback in the last 19 days with a 71-67 loss to Findlay (10-9 overall, 7-8 GLIAC) Monday evening at the Matthaei.

It was a back-and-forth first half with 10 lead changes, three ties and the biggest lead was five (Findlay 29-24 at intermission).

The second half was much the same with five lead changes, five ties and WSU holding a six –point advantage (57-51) with 1:49 remaining.

After trailing for the first nine-plus minutes after halftime, the Warriors tied the game at 44 on a pair of free throws by junior guard Gavin Toma (Troy, Mich. / Southfield Christian).  There were four lead changes in the following four minutes with the game's sixth tie (50-50) coming on an offensive rebound and put-back by senior forward Daniel Park (Dearborn Hts., Mich. / Allen Park Cabrini).

After Findlay's John Staley split a pair from the charity stripe, Ball did the same to knot the game at 51.  Freshman forward Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) had an offensive rebound and bucket with just under five minutes remaining in regulation to put WSU ahead 53-51.

A jumper by Toma made it a four-point lead and sophomore forward Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) extended the margin to six with a lay-up with 1:49 left.  The Warriors would not score for the rest of regulation or the first three minutes of overtime.

Meanwhile, Findlay which made 12 triples and nine two-point baskets, had Elijah Kahlig hit back-to-back three pointers in the final 90 seconds to send the game into the extra session.

The Oilers tallied the first four points of overtime on fast break lay-up by Kahlig and a pair of foul shots by Ricardo Smith.  Toma made a pair of free throws to pull Wayne State within two (61-59) with 1:56 left.

A jumper by Jake Heagen increased UF's lead to four before Key split a pair in a double bonus situation.  A jumper by Findlay's Tyler Stern-Tucker preceded two more foul shots by Toma, who finished 8-of-8 from the charity stripe in the contest.

Kahlig sank a pair in a one-and-one situation to make it a five point game (67-62) with 11.2 seconds left.  A lay-up by sophomore guard Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) with 6.1 seconds pulled the Warriors within three at 67-64.

Heagen made two foul shots with 4.7 on the clock before Bishop drained a long triple with just over a second remaining to make it a two-point game (69-67).

Findlay's Dylan Kaufman, who tallied a game-high 22 points, made both foul shots to complete the scoring.  Kaufman made six triples.  Smith led UF with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Toma totaled 20 points for WSU, while Bishop added 16 points and Key contributed 11 points off the bench.  Both Key and Ball finished with a team-best seven rebounds.

Wayne State will conclude the three-game home stand with a 7:30 p.m. tip on Thursday vs. Tiffin.
