Winning Streak Reaches Six for Volleyball

Avery Punches tallied 12 kills and hit .500 for the match.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (15-2, 8-1 GLIAC) cruised past Northwood (9-7, 3-5 GLIAC) on Saturday evening.  The Warriors took all three sets to win their sixth consecutive match.  Wayne State currently holds the best overall record in the GLIAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The opening set was tied at 6-6 until WSU rattled off six straight points to take a 12-6 lead.  The visitors advantage ballooned to 17-7 and the Green & Gold would go on to win comfortably, 25-10.

• Northwood sprinted out to a 6-2 lead in the second set and led 12-11 before the Warriors regained the momentum.  Avery Punches (Rockford, Mich.) delivered a kill to put WSU on top 13-12.  Wayne State would not trail the rest of the game as the trio of Punches, Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) and Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) provided the firepower as WSU took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-22 victory.

• With its sights set on its sixth sweep of the season, WSU trailed the third set 7-4 following back-to-back kills from Allison Getty.  However, three straight points from Punches tied the set at 11-11.  Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) notched a kill, giving the Warriors an 18-14 advantage.  Wayne State led 24-17 before Northwood went on a quick 3-0 run to make it interesting but Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) ended the match with a kill.

FROM COACH KOTH
"Nice road win today for the Warriors!  Our service pressure and transition attack was really the difference today."

UP NEXT
• WSU will await word on its three opponents for the upcoming Midwest Regional Crossover in Aurora, Ill.  The announcement will be made early next week.  The two-day event features programs from the GLIAC, GLVC and G-MAC.
