Baseball Finds Win Column Twice on Monday

Tyler Tompson sealed the game two victory with the help of 4-6-3 double play.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. --  The Wayne State University baseball program (8-5) continued its Spring Break trip at the RussMatt Invitational with a pair of wins over Pace (3-5) on Monday.  The Green & Gold won game one 7-1 powered by a four-run first inning and hung on for a 4-3 victory in game two as a clutch double play secured the one-run lead.

GAME ONE vs. PACE (W, 7-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) began the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning.  It was the redshirt senior and co-captain's first collegiate round-tripper.  The Warriors added two more runs in the inning on RBIs from Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) and Patrick Adams III (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle).

- Pace used two hits and an error to score its lone run of the game in the top of the second inning.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) stretched WSU's lead to 5-1 with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the second inning.  The Warriors continued to execute on offense and added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Adams III drove home a run with a single into center and Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) pushed the advantage to 7-1 with an RBI double into left field.

AT THE PLATE
- Rose went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored as both Winkelseth and Adams III drove in two runs each.

ON THE MOUND
- Hunter Brown (St. Clair, Mich. / Lakeview) (2-0) earned his second victory of the season going five innings and allowing a run on three hits.  Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) made his collegiate debit and pitched two scoreless frames, including two strikeouts.

GAME TWO vs. PACE (W, 4-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Warriors scored two runs on two hits and an error in the top of the second inning.  JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) doubled home a run and later scored on a throwing error for the frame's second tally.  Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) hammered his fourth home run of the season in the top of the third inning to give WSU a 3-0 advantage.

- The Setters tied the game at 3-3 with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the third inning on a three-run home run from John Kukura.

- Rose led off the top of the fifth inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Winkelseth.  Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) singled and Rose scored the go-ahead run on a single from Harms.

-  After two scoreless innings from Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio), Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) was summoned from the bullpen in the ninth inning to record the final three outs.  Pace threatened, getting runners at first and second with one out but a 4-6-3 double play sealed the victory.

AT THE PLATE
- Harms powered the lineup with his solo home run and RBI single as WSU used just five hits in the winning effort.

ON THE MOUND
- Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (1-2) battled through four innings to get the win, striking out seven batters and allowing three earned runs.  Dill did not allow a base runner as he held the lead, allowing Tompson to collect his second save of the season.

UP NEXT
- After an off day on Tuesday, the Warriors will look to avenge an earlier season loss to West Chester against the Rams on Wednesday.  First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
