Baseball's Winning Streak Reaches Six

Wayne State won a pair of one-run games on Wednesday vs. Saginaw Valley State.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (21-14, 13-5 GLIAC) continue to show resilience in the face of adversity and injuries.  The Warriors pushed their winning streak to six games with two wins (7-6 in extra innings and 1-0) over Saginaw Valley State (16-20, 8-10 GLIAC) on Wednesday.  In addition, head coach Ryan Kelley coached his 400th game at Wayne State during game one.

"The team showed resiliency today by overcoming a large game one deficit and a key injury," said Kelley.  "Our pitching staff did a great job by delivering consistent shutout innings after the first inning of game one.  Taylor Horn has been a great leader out of the bullpen during our current winning streak.  Nick Cowen, Tyler Tompson and Addison Pawelek each helped with bullpen leadership today.  JT Conti did a great job during his game two start and Zach Girard played a great third base in game two.  It started with the first play of the game and ended with a great sliding play to seal the win.  He was a tremendous defensive spark for our club."

GAME ONE vs. SAGINAW VALLEY STATE (W, 7-6 / 8 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Cardinals scored six runs on five hits in the top of the first inning including a two-run double to begin the scoring.  Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) settled down and retired the side in order in the second inning.  Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) singled to right field and later scored on an RBI groundout from Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South).

- Harms continued to lead the comeback with three-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 6-4.  In the bottom of the sixth inning, an RBI groundout from Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) plated WSU's fifth run and Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Stevenson) flied out to left field to bring the game-tying run.  Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning.

- Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) doubled to left center before Clifton was plunked to start the bottom of the eighth inning.  A single up the middle from Jorah loaded the bases and Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) won the game with an RBI single to the right side.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Harms, Kelly and Jorah all collected two hits.
- Harms paced the offense with three RBI.

ON THE MOUND
- Kinch struck out four batters in four innings and allowed six earned runs on six hits.
- Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) pitched two scoreless innings, while Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) earned the victory by pitching two scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.

GAME TWO vs. SAGINAW VALLEY STATE (W, 1-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) pulled double-duty in game two.  He retired the first six Cardinals in order and did not allow a hit until the top of the fourth inning, all while hitting for himself.  Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) sent a one-out single to right field and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Loconsole moved to third on a groundout and scored on a double off the wall from Harms.

- SVSU threatened in the top of the seventh inning with Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) on the mound.  After a strikeout, Jordan Swiss singled up the middle and Dylin Eschenburg drew a four-pitch walk.  A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance.  Tompson got Dylan Schultz to strikeout looking and Zach Girard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill. / Dundee Crown) saved the game with a diving stop and throw from third base.

ON THE MOUND
- Conti picked up his first win of the season.  He struck out four, walked four and allowed two hits in five and 1/3 innings.

- Tompson notched his third save of the season with a two-strikeout inning.
