Tobey Leads Baseball to Series Split with #18 Grand Valley State

The freshman right-hander improved to 4-1 with his game two victory.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (11-14, 5-7 GLIAC) won game two on Saturday to earn a series split against #18 Grand Valley State (15-10, 7-5 GLIAC). The Lakers won game one 9-1. Freshman Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) pitched seven innings in game two and struck out a season-high nine batters while only allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

Game One (L, 1-9)
The Lakers scored two runs on three hits and a WSU error to take 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

WSU got a run back in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from starting pitcher Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) (2-3). Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) drove a double down the right field line to begin the threat.

Two Warrior errors in the top of the third inning led to two more GVSU runs and extended the visitors' lead to 4-1. The Lakers kept the pressure on with two runs in the fourth inning on three hits.

A three-run home run off the bat of Jamie Potts accounted for the final three runs of the contest and gave GVSU a 9-1 lead.

Zimmerman pitched four innings and struck out four while allowing one earned run. Jake Davis (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek) and Christian Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.) tossed the final three innings.

GVSU's Zach Anderson (3-0) tallied a complete game and held the Warriors to just three hits.

Game Two (W, 4-2)
Similar to Friday, WSU came out with a different look in game two. However, the Lakers aimed to score first with two hits in the top of the first inning. A base running blunder and heads-up defense by WSU kept GVSU off the board.

Three hits in the top of the third inning netted the Lakers a run to jump out to a 1-0 lead.

Travis Rodery (Wyandotte, Mich. / Roosevelt) led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. After a Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) single and a Josh Arndt (Sterling Heights. Mich. / Oxford) groundout, Rodery was able to score - tying the game at 1-1.

Zimmerman's second sacrifice fly of the day gave the Green & Gold a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tobey was able to keep the GVSU bats at bay in the sixth and seventh innings.

RBIs from Zimmerman and Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) in the bottom of the seventh inning gave WSU a 4-1 lead.

GVSU began the eighth inning with a walk and an RBI double to cut WSU's lead to 4-2. Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) replaced Tobey and was able to stop the Lakers' rally. Sorenson worked around a one-out walk in the top of the ninth inning to collect his second save of the season and secure the 4-2 victory.

WSU will remain at home and host Saginaw Valley State for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 2 PM.
