Women's Basketball Upended By Findlay, 71-51

Williams notches double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (0-1 overall) began its 2018-19 regular season with a 71-51 setback to the visiting University of Findlay Oilers (1-0 overall) Friday evening at the Matthaei.

After falling behind 5-0, the Warriors tallied the next five points on a triple by junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) followed by an offensive rebound and bucket by senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King).  The contest was knotted twice more (7-7 and 10-10) over the next three minutes before back-to-back baskets by UF's Anna Hintz put the guests in front 14-10.  Over the next 2:30, WSU went on a 10-0 run that began with another Matus triple and concluded with seven consecutive points by Williams.  A Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich.) lay-up with 0.1 seconds remaining in the opening stanza ended a 5-0 Oiler spurt and extended Wayne State's advantage to 22-19.

The Warriors did not score in the first six minutes of the second period as Findlay rattled off 15 points to take a commanding 34-22 lead.  A lay-up by freshman Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) ended the scoreless drought.  Junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) connected on a jumper on WSU's ensuing possession to cut the deficit to eight (34-26) with just under 3:20 remaining in the opening half.  Four different Warriors scored over the final 2:30 to pull the hosts within six (40-34) at intermission.

Hintz led all scorers with 18 points at halftime on 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.  Matus had four triples for 12 points, while Williams had 10 points and six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.

A Cherney lay-up made it a seven-point game (43-36) early in the third quarter, but a 9-0 run by Findlay extended the Oiler margin to 16 (52-36) with just over six minutes left in the stanza.  Wayne State would get within 13 (54-41) on a lay-up by Villemure.

The Warriors were never closer than 16 (65-49) during the fourth period.
