Volleyball Snaps Ashland's Streak in Five Sets

The Warriors improve to 9-3 in the GLIAC and sit atop the South Division.

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The first-place Wayne State University volleyball team (14-9, 9-3 GLIAC) traveled to Ashland (13-10, 6-6 GLIAC) on Friday night for an important match within the GLIAC South Division and won in five sets.

The Warriors snapped a 23-match home winning streak for the Eagles and exacted revenge on Ashland ending Wayne State's season during the 2016 GLIAC Tournament.  The last win by WSU in Ashland, Ohio came in 2013 and the Eagles had not lost at home since Oct. 9, 2015.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Back-to-back kills from Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) and Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) gave the Warriors a 10-7 lead in the first set.  The visitors continued their three-point lead at 17-14 following another point from Richardson.  Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) put WSU on top 20-17.  WSU's lead was trimmed to one at 23-22 but consecutive kills from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) gave WSU the 25-22 victory.

- WSU led the second set 4-1 before the Eagles tied the game at 4-4 on a Wayne State attacking error.  Ashland continued to control the set and led 13-7 after a service ace by the Eagles.  The home advantage grew to 17-9 and Ashland would go on to win 25-21.  A late 5-0 rally was not enough as the match drew even at 1-1.

- An Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) ace and a kill from Krenz put WSU up 5-3 early in the third set.  A combo block from Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) and Krenz forced AU to take a timeout with the Green & Gold leading 11-7.  The set was tied at 15-15 before a Richardson point gave the Warriors a 20-17 lead.  Wayne State led 23-21 after another ace from Rodriguez and a block provided by Frazee and Natalie Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) gave WSU a 25-22 victory and a 2-1 match lead.

- The Eagles took a 5-2 lead after a WSU attacking error in the fourth set.  Asiedu tied the game at 10-10 with a point but AU led 15-11 later in the set and head coach Tim Koth used a timeout.  A kill from Moore pulled WSU within five a 22-17 but AU would force a fifth set with a 25-19 win.

- The fifth set was tied at 3-3 before Wayne State took an 8-5 lead on a Frazee point.  An ace from Madison Kielty (Plymouth, Mich. / Canton) pushed WSU's lead to 10-8 but the Eagles stormed back to take an 11-10 lead.  Krenz tied the set at 12-12 but Ashland won the next two points, taking a 14-12 lead.  However, the resilient Warriors tied the set at 14-14 on kills from Moore and Richardson.  The game remained tied at 15-15, 16-16 and 17-17.  Asiedu broke serve with a kill and gave WSU an 18-17 lead before AU tied the set once again at 18-18.  Back-to-back kills from Richardson gave the Warriors a 20-18 victory and a five-set win.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Richardson tallied 23 kills, while Frazee finished with a season-high 14 kills.  Krenz (12) and Moore (11) also collected double-digit kills.  Breault dished a season-best 62 assists, while Rodriguez led the defense with 24 digs.  Richardson earned her 10th double-double of the season.

FROM COACH KOTH
"Tonight was a gutsy performance by the Warriors.  We battled through the adversities that Ashland threw at us.  They are much improved but we showed that we have great finishing capabilities on the big points.  I'm very proud of our group.  We played winning volleyball tonight!"

UP NEXT
- The Warriors continue their trip through Ohio on Saturday at Tiffin.  First serve is schedule for 2:00 p.m.
