Baseball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader at Saginaw Valley

The Warriors fall to 7-5 in the GLIAC on the season.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (15-14, 7-5 GLIAC) met Saginaw Valley State (14-16, 6-6 GLIAC) for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.  The Warriors dropped game one in extra innings 3-2 and fell in game two 6-2.

GAME ONE vs. SAGINAW VALLEY STATE (L, 2-3 // 8 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Both teams were quiet until the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning.  Following a Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) leadoff double and a Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) single in the top of the fourth inning, an error allowed WSU to score a run and tie the game at 1-1.  Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) (2-4) retired the side in order in the bottom of the fourth inning and danced around an error in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game tied.

- WSU put two runners on in the top of the sixth inning via singles but were unable to produce any runs.  Horvath kept SVSU off the bases in the sixth inning and ended the frame with his fourth strikeout of the day.

- After a scoreless seventh inning the game moved to extra innings.  A one-out double from Baldwin in the top of the eighth inning led to him scoring on a wild pitch two batters later to put the Warriors on top 2-1.  The Cardinals tied the game with a leadoff solo home run in the eighth inning and eventually won the game on a bunt single RBI.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Baldwin finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

ON THE MOUND
- Horvath struck out five in his seven and 1/3 innings of work, while allowing three earned runs on six hits and one walk.

GAME TWO vs. SAGINAW VALLEY STATE (L, 2-6)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- SVSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead witth two runs on a hit in the bottom of the first inning.  Three hits produced another run for the Cardinals in the bottom of the third inning.  Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) replaced Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) (2-2) to get the final out of the third inning.

- An RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning extended the home lead to 4-0.  Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) drove in WSU's first run in the top of the fifth inning and Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) followed with an RBI single of his own after a 10-pitch at-bat.

- SVSU scored twice more in the fifth inning to make the final score 6-2.  The Green & Gold went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
