Hentges' triple hat trick sparks fifth straight road win

Hentges and Boyce have record breaking day in double-digit road win

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Concordia-St. Paul (6-3, 3-2 GLIAC) won its fifth straight road game, topping Northern Michigan (1-7, 0-5 GLIAC) 23-12 on Wednesday evening at the Superior Dome in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Golden Bears remain on the road, protecting a 5-0 road record on the year at McKendree on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Illinois.

Sophomores Maddie Hentges and Alina Boyce reached new heights in strong individual offensive performances as Hentges achieved the program's first-ever triple hat trick in setting individual records for goals (9) and points (10) in a single game. Boyce nearly kept pace as her eight points trail only Hentges' 10 while her six goal performance was achieved for the fourth time in team history and the first time in 2018. It's the second six goal game for Boyce, also scoring six last year at home against Northern Michigan.

After Northern Michigan threatened Concordia's second half 10-goal lead in the previous meeting just a few weeks ago at the Concordia Dome, the Golden Bears were determined to put the Wildcats away in the season rematch. The Golden Bears claimed a 7-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of play, scoring the seven goals between the 5:15 and 11:56 mark of the first half.

From there, Concordia didn't let NMU get closer than a five goal margin, achieved just once at 7-2 in the middle of the first half. The Bears carried a 13-5 lead into the break as NMU committed 17 first half turnovers (CSP 11) while Concordia held a 17-10 advantage in ground balls which helped created a 29-10 first half shot margin.

After building a 15-5 lead in the fifth minute of the second half, Northern Michigan put together a 4-0 spurt in a six-plus minute stretch in the early to middle parts of the second half. But in the rematch, Concordia promptly answered with a 4-0 run of its own to reclaim the double-digit lead (19-9) in the 18th minute and didn't let NMU closer than nine the rest of the way.

In the final tally, Concordia fired 45 shots (39 on goal) while limiting NMU to 20 with 16 on goal. Playing with the lead, Concordia committed just six second half turnovers (17 total) while NMU committed 25 in the game while CSP held a final 24-18 ground ball advantage. Concordia also only missed one clear all game (14-15) while NMU was 11-13.

With the record-setting performance by Hentges, the sophomore now has 38 points (27g, 11a) on the year and leads the team across the board in scoring. She also added three ground balls. In four games against NMU, Hentges has scored 26 points (20g, 6a) for the Bears.

Despite missing multiple contests, Boyce is still fourth on the team in points (20) and goals (13) and was a perfect 2-2 on free position shots and added a pair of ground balls.

Sophomore Kailey Heinl joined in the offensive surge with four goals and two assists for a six-point performance, adding five draw controls, three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

The sophomore trio who led the team in scoring in the 2017 inaugural season combined for 19 goals and five assists in the victory.

Sophomore Sara Stickler led the defense with a team-high four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Freshman Margot Coomes led the Bears with six draw controls, adding a goal and an assist with a pair of ground balls.

In the net, the goalie timeshare continued to be successful as sophomore Katie Lottsfeldt and freshman Claire Hagen each had a pair of saves. Lottsfeldt picked up the win as the starter, helping CSP build the big lead while Hagen soundly protected it in the second half.

The Wildcats were led by Graison Ringlever with four goals while Ellie Bahr added three. Tess Kostelec had a game-high nine draw controls for NMU.
