Grand Valley sweeps doubleheader in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (13-6, 2-2 GLIAC) traveled to Davenport University to begin a three-game series against #12/26 Grand Valley (12-5, 3-0 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon. The Lakers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win game one, 3-0. The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in game two but were unable to add to its lead and GVSU went on to win 4-1.

Game One (L, 0-3)
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) and Spencer Church (Windsor, Ont. / Holy Names) both singled in the top of the first inning but WSU was unable to plate any runs.

GVSU also put two runners on in the bottom of the second inning but a 6-4-3 double play helped starting pitcher Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) (2-2).

The Warriors stranded two runners in the top of the fifth inning but again were unable to break the scoreless tie.

GVSU broke the tie with three runs on one hit and a Warrior error to take a 3-0 lead. The inning began with a hit-by-pitch and the next four Lakers reached allowing GVSU to use a wild pitch, RBI single and a s sacrifice fly to take the 3-0 lead.

WSU attempted to stage a rally in the top of the seventh inning with two walks. However, Chris Ripple was able to collect his fourth save of the season and shut down the Warrior rally.

Zimmerman went all six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with two strikeouts. GVSU's starter, Aaron Jensen (3-2) was sharp, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts while walking four Warriors.

Game Two (L, 1-4)
The Warriors struck first in game two on an RBI single from Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova).

GVSU tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second inning but Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (2-1) limited the damage as he stranded three Lakers on the basepaths.

The GLIAC favorite added a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

The Green & Gold threatened in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single from Church and a one-out double from Zach Johnson (Grandville, Mich.). Ripple was again summoned from the bullpen to close out his fifth save of the season.

Kinch lasted five innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits while walking six Lakers. Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) replaced Kinch and pitched the final inning.

Evan Nietfeldt (4-0) went 6.1 innings and allowed one unearned run on just three hits.

The two teams wrap up the series on Saturday with a nine-inning game beginning at 1 AM.
