Volleyball Victorious at Michigan Tech

Three Warriors finished with double-digit kills led by 13 from Heather Weiss.

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- After taking the first two sets on Saturday, the Wayne State University volleyball team (9-14, 6-10 GLIAC) survived to win the match 3-2 at Michigan Tech (9-16, 6-10 GLIAC). The win snapped a two-match losing streak after sweeps at Saginaw Valley State and Northern Michigan. The Green & Gold won sets one and two 25-21 and 25-16. The Huskies avoided the sweep with a 25-12 set three win and forced a fifth set after a 25-22 fourth set victory.

Three Warriors posted double-digit kills led by Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) with 13 kills. Ellen Oppenheim (St. Joseph, Mich.) and Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) both posted 11-kill performances.

Oppenheim gave WSU an 11-8 lead in the first set after back-to-back kills. Another kill from the sophomore kept the visitors ahead by four, 20-16. MTU cut the deficit to one at 20-19 but WSU would respond and win 25-21.

WSU started quickly in the second set, leading 9-3 after two service aces from Weiss and a MTU attack error. The Warriors would cruise to the 2-0 match lead with a 25-16 win.

However, the home squad did not go away quietly winning the next two sets 25-12 and 25-22.

In the decisive fifth set, the Warriors regained its early form. A combo block from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) gave WSU a 5-3 lead in the final game. The Warriors ended the set on a 5-1 run to win the match three sets to two.

Wayne State will remain on the road next weekend beginning with a match at Ferris State on Friday at 7 PM. The Bulldogs were ranked #22 in this week's AVCA Division II Top 25 Poll. Saturday's opponent, Grand Valley State, is currently ranked 14th.
