Baseball Drops Finale at Davenport

Junior Josh Nelson worked two scoreless innings on Sunday.
Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The 16th-ranked Wayne State University baseball team (30-12 overall, 14-9 GLIAC) wrapped up its series at Davenport (26-16 overall, 12-11 GLIAC) on Sunday and the Warriors dropped their third game of the series, 3-0.  It's the first time this season WSU has been shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors loaded the bases in the top of the first inning with two hits and a walk but were unable to push across any runs.  Both teams were scoreless through five and 1/2 innings before the Panthers broke through for three runs on five hits but WSU was able to stop the rally with a pickoff at third base.

Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) and Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) teamed up to throw out a runner at third after a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Another outfield assist, this one from Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) cut down a runner at home to keep the deficit at three and ended the inning.

The Green & Gold went down in order in the ninth inning as DU won the game 3-0 and the series 3-1.

AT THE PLATE
Foley, Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) and Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) all posted two-hit games.

ON THE MOUND
Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) (1-1) made his first start of the season and allowed three runs in six innings on seven hits and a walk, while striking out four batters.  Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) pitched two scoreless innings.

UP NEXT
WSU will host Lake Erie for the final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday when Lake Erie visits Harwell Field for a 3:00 p.m. clash.  The Warriors will conclude the regular season with a four-game series vs. Saginaw Valley State beginning on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
