KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (5-4 overall) began the Sunshine State Games on Friday with a 4-0 win over #25 Seton Hill (5-4 overall). It was the first of eight games over eight days for the Green & Gold played at
Osceola County Stadium.
Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (2-0) turned in his second sharp performance of the season and notched his first career complete game shutout, while striking out 10 batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors struck first with a run in the first inning with the help of an SHU throwing error.
Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) started the frame with a single and
Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) followed with a walk. After a
Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) grounded into a fielder's choice, the aforementioned error allowed Rose to score. WSU added a run in the second inning after
Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) reached on another SHU throwing error. With two outs,
Zach Girard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill. / Dundee Crown) singled to center before Rose sent a single through the left side, scoring Jorah.
- A two-out double down the right field line from Finkbeiner and a single from Baldwin gave WSU a 3-0 lead after three and a half innings. Tobey continued to be effective and danced around a two-out triple in the bottom of the fourth inning to keep the Griffins off the scoreboard.
Brandon Williams (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) doubled to left field and SHU's third error of the game allowed him to reach third base and later score on a sacrifice fly from Finkbeiner, extending WSU's lead to 4-0. Tobey worked his way out of a jams in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to keep WSU's 4-0 lead intact.
- In the top of the ninth inning,
Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) sent a one-out triple to center field but was left stranded at third. Tobey returned to the hill in the bottom of the ninth inning and secured the shutout collecting the final three outs, including his 10th punch out.
AT THE PLATE
- Rose and Kelly both posted two-hit games, while Rose, Finkbeiner and Baldwin all tallied an RBI.
ON THE MOUND
- Tobey followed a career-high 11 strikeouts in his season debut last week with a 10-strikeout performance on Friday. He did not allow a run during his career-long outing of nine innings, scattered seven hits and walked two batters.

- The Warriors will meet Missouri-St. Louis for two games on Saturday with game one set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
