The Malone University softball team (5-1-1) played two wacky and wet games on Wednesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic in Myrtle Beach, winning the morning cap 17-13 over York College (PA) and then tying the University of Mount Union 6-6 in the second game after it was called off after five innings due to unplayable field conditions.
In the victory over York (PA), Malone's 1 through 4 hitters combined to go 9-for-21 with 12 rbi's. Sophomore
Alexa Holztrager was responsible for five of the rbi's, leading off the contest with a solo home run and then clearing the bases with a three-run double in the fourth inning.
Sophomore
Emily Isla went 3-for-5 with three rbi's while junior
Desi Hengoed went 2-for-5 with three rbi's from the cleanup spot, including the game's biggest hit, a two-run double in the sixth inning to snap a 12-12 tie and put the Pioneers ahead for good. Sophomore
Emily Kahoun also enjoyed a terrific ballgame, finishing 3-for-3 at the plate with four runs scored and two rbi's.
Junior
Jillian Coyle moved to 4-0 on the season, pitching a complete game. Although she surrendered 13 runs on 11 hits and eight walks, only six of the runs were earned.
Malone raced to an early 4-0 lead over Mount Union in game two before the Purple Raiders stormed back to take the lead with five unanswered runs. Malone regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning, sparked by an rbi double from Hengoed. With field conditions getting noticeable worse by the minute, Mount Union tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth. They had a chance to take the lead but Malone threw out the winning run trying to tag up on a fly ball. After the double play, the game was called off, making it an official tie by NCAA rules.
Holztrager added two hits, two runs scored, and an rbi in the rain-shortened contest. Hengoed also had two hits and two rbi's and freshman
Mikayla Fowler had two run-scoring sacrifice flies.
Junior
Stephanie Byrne worked all five innings, giving up the six earned runs as a result of six Mount Union hits. She struck out four batters.
Malone will cross its fingers for sunshine tomorrow in hopes of playing an 11:30 am scheduled game against Gwynedd-Mercy University (PA)
