Men’s Tennis Opens GLIAC Play With A 5-4 Win Over Michigan Tech

Detroit, Mich. – The Wayne State men's tennis team began its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference schedule with a win on Friday by defeating Michigan Tech 5-4. The victory, which was WSU's fourth in a row, gives the Warriors a record of 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC.

The Warriors have now won three-straight conference openers and have not lost to Michigan Tech in the past 10 years.

In doubles play, WSU's No. 1 pairing of sophomore Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France)and graduate student Britton Steele (Novi, Mich., Detroit Catholic Central (Mich. State)) continued their stellar play with an 8-1 win over Luka Stupar and Doug Yossida.

The Warriors were also able to gain the all-important second doubles point when senior Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich., Warren De La Salle) and freshman Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador, Unidad Educativa Javier) defeated Tim Viola and Chris Verhulst in third doubles 8-4.

Junior Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich., Canton) and freshman Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) lost the first of several close matches on the day between the Warriors and Huskies 8-6 to David Heuer and Anders Sandholm.

Down 2-1 heading into singles play Michigan Tech would not go away quietly, coming back to win three singles matches as Steele (2-6, 1-6), Gamarra (7-5, 2-6, 2-6) and senior Roberto Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico, Preparaforia del Estado de Comitan (Seward County)) (5-7, 5-7) lost in the second, fourth and fifth flights respectively.

However, Wayne State was able to earn the team victory thanks to wins in first, third and sixth singles.

Moulin, the Warriors' ace, was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Stupar. Ducret followed Moulin's lead with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 victory against Heuer and freshman Jon Groszek (Dearborn Heights, Mich., Divine Child) was able to pull off the 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Viola.

Moulin, Ducret and Groszek all extended their winning streaks in singles competition to six, four and three matches.
