-- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (3-1) shot 56.9 percent from the floor Saturday as the Warriors improved to 2-0 in the GLIAC with an 88-75 victory over Ohio Dominican (3-3, 0-2 GLIAC) at the Matthaei.

Junior Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) scored a season-high 27 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to lead WSU. Sophomore Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich) and junior Ondrea Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) each scored 14 points as well for the Warriors.

Wayne State got off to a quick start, leading 10-4 just over four minutes into the contest. Lavita-Stephens and Brown each knocked down three-pointers and Brown and junior Kayla Bridges (Canton, Mich. /  Canton) added lay-ups to help WSU get out to a lead.

The lead changed nine times in the first half, but the Warriors used an 11-0 run in a span of 1:52 to take a 35-25 lead with 6:57 left in the first half. Sophomore Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich. / Durand) capped off the run with a steal and lay-up. Wayne State led at the break, 51-40, after Lavita-Stephens added her second three-pointer of the first half with just 15 seconds remaining before halftime.

Wayne State opened the second half on a 15-5 run, with Hughes scoring six points and Brown adding five during the stretch. WSU led by as many as 21 points in the second half. Ohio Dominican cut the lead to nine points twice, early in the second half, but WSU led by double digits nearly the entire second half.

Brown finished an impressive night by shooting 11-of-13 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. She also had three steals and three assists. Lavita-Stephens was 4-of-5 on three-pointers as Wayne State finished 7-of-17 from beyond the arc. Long scored eight points off the bench, while junior Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) dished out four assists. Eleven players for Wayne State scored at least two points.

Both teams had 12 turnovers, while WSU held advantages in rebounding (35-33), assists (15-10) and steals (7-2).

Ohio Dominican was led by Kacee Hockenberry with 24 points and Melissa Scherpenberg with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

The Warriors next play Saturday, Dec. 14 at Lake Erie. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
