Softball Completes Sweep With 5-0 Victory Over Ashland

Spaccarotelli drives in three.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (30-7 overall, 8-2 GLIAC) completed a twinbill sweep of the visiting Ashland Eagles (19-9 overall, 8-4 GLIAC) with a 5-0 triumph in game two Saturday at the WSU Softball Field.

The Warriors broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fourth.  Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) had a one-out double to right center.  After a walk to Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child), #Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) had a swinging bunt base hit beating the throw from the AU third baseman to load the bases.  Against a drawn-in infield, Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo) laced a 2-2 offering just past the Eagle shortstop into left center field scoring both Stanley and Ryan.

After a 10 pitch inning by WSU senior Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) in the bottom of the fourth, the Wayne State added two more runs in the top of the fifth.

Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) reached on a one-out fielding error and went to second on a single by Stanley who scorched a pitch off the third baseman's glove.  Both runners moved up on a passed ball, with Ryan reaching as her infield pop up was dropped by the second baseman near the foul line allowing Banton to score.  With two outs, Spaccarotelli singled into shallow center field scoring Stanley.

WSU's final run came in the sixth as Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) singled with an absolute rocket off the pitchers glove which landed in left center field.  When Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) was hit by a pitch, pinch-runner Kassie Snyder (Marine City, Mich.) advanced to second.  Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) had a sacrifice bunt advancing both runners.  Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) followed with a hard hit ball up the middle which ricocheted off Hursey's leg allowing Snyder to score.

Hanes recorded her 1,000th collegiate strikeout on 3-2 strikeout swinging to end the first inning and finished the contest with seven strikeouts and one walk while limiting AU to two hits, both by Erica Miller.

Hursey was tagged for five runs (three earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Spaccarotelli finished 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Stanley had two hits and two runs scored.

Wayne State will host conference rival Tiffin for a doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon.
