Oilers Win Tough Battle Against The Cavaliers

The University of Findlay softball team traveled to North Canton, Ohio to face Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Walsh University in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 19.  The Oilers edged the Cavaliers in the first game 1-0 while defeating them in extra innings in the second game 4-3. 

Tawna Whited pitched a gem in the first game for the Oilers, giving up zero runs and only allowing one hit while striking out five hitters in seven innings to earn her 46th career victory. 

The lone run of the game occurred at the third inning when Emily Reynolds had an RBI single.

Megan Turner and Tori Allen each added a single in the contest. 

In the second game, Bonnie Zappitelli picked up the victory on the mound, giving up zero runs and zero hits in two innings. 

Walsh took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but the Oilers bounced back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth when Emily Reynolds blasted a solo homerun and Abby Funk knocked in an RBI single.    

The Oilers claimed victory in the bottom of the ninth inning.  After Courtney Dwyer struck out swinging, Jackie Messersmith hit a one out double to put the Oilers in scoring position.  Tori Allen then belted the game-winning RBI single. 

Tawna Whited had one run batted in while Megan Turner and Emily Stewart each had one hit in the contest. 

The Oilers, who are now 18-13 on the year with a 10-10 mark in GLIAC play, will host Michigan-Dearborn in a two-game set on Monday, April 21 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
