CLARION, Pa. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (0-2) continued action in the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament hosted by Clarion University on Friday afternoon. The Warriors met former GLIAC member Gannon (2-0) and the Golden Knights took the match 3-1. WSU took the second game 25-20 after dropping the opening set 26-24. Gannon captured sets three and four 26-24 and 25-16, respectively.
The Green & Gold led 5-1 early in the opening frame.
Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) connected on a kill to give WSU a 9-5 advantage. A
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) kill put WSU up 13-9 and forced a Gannon timeout. The Warriors were the first to 20 after a
Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) kill gave WSU a 20-18 lead. However, the Golden Knights would take a 24-23 lead and eventually win the set 26-24.
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) gave WSU a 9-7 lead in the second set. The Warriors would lead for the rest of the game and eventually would take the set 25-20 and the match at one win each. WSU took four of the last five points including a pair of kills from Bonewits.
Gannon would respond with solid performances in sets three and four. WSU trailed for the majority of the third game but did pull within a point at 21-20 after a Bonewits kill. The Warriors tied the set at 24-24 but Gannon took the final two points to take a 2-1 match lead.
A kill from Moore put WSU up 9-6 in the fourth set and a GU attack error kept the Warriors ahead 12-11. Another Golden Knight attack error would keep WSU up by a point, 15-14. However, Gannon would finish on a 11-1 run and take the set 25-16 and the match 3-1.
Bonewits and Weiss led the offense with 10 kills each and
Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon) distributed 39 assists. Moore aided WSU's defensive efforts with 13 digs while
Madison Kielty (Commerce Twp., Mich. / Canton) added 12 digs. As a team, the Warriors hit .254 while the Golden Knights hit .243.
Wayne State will conclude the tournament on Saturday with a 9 AM match against Concord and Edinboro at 3 PM.
