Men's Tennis Posts Another Shutout In Victory at Michigan Tech

The Warriors did not surrender a point in either of the back-to-back matches this weekend.

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (13-9 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) capped off a perfect weekend of play with a 7-0 blanking of Michigan Tech (0-12 overall, 0-4 GLIAC) on Saturday morning at the Gates Tennis Center in Houghton.

DOUBLES
The Warriors started off work in doubles by allowing just three set points to the Huskies.

Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and Joe Steele (Beverly Hills, Mich.) posted a perfect 6-0 victory at the third flight over Artem Sharkota and Adam Fenjiro.  The two Warriors were playing with each other for the first time this season (either fall or spring).  This was also Steele's first doubles match since March 9 vs. Judson and second of the spring slate.

Finishing with a 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot were Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) and Luke Laws (Sunderland, England).  They defeated Ricardo Nunez and Ambarish Rao to record their third consecutive doubles victory together.

Finally, the top flight pairing of No. 3-ranked Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) tallied a 6-2 triumph over the top pairing for MTU, Vitor Jordao and Leon Sell.

SINGLES
WSU swept singles action for the third time, nabbing all six points on Saturday.

All five completed matches were won in straight sets.  Drenth (the No. 24-ranked player in the nation) posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jordao at the first flight, while Grey won 6-1, 6-2 against Sell at the second spot.

For Drenth, the sophomore backed up his GLIAC Player of the Week award from the previous week with two more singles wins and two more doubles victories this weekend.

Kitayama blanked Nunez in the first set (6-0), before grabbing a 6-3 win in the second set at the No. 4 spot.

After being in the lineup at Lake Superior State and not seeing the court due to the Warriors clinching the match early, Steele received the opportunity to play this time at the No. 5 spot.  The junior failed to disappoint, as he surrendered just one point (6-0, 6-1) in registering his first singles victory of the spring schedule.

Also picking up an opportunity to play was Ryan Okonski (Stevensville, Mich.).  At the No. 6 spot, the redshirt junior played in his second singles contest of the spring and garnered a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sharkota.

Karcz's match was the only one of the day to not go the full distance.  His opponent, Fenjiro, retired in the second set, which gave Karcz the victory.  The WSU graduate student won the first set, 7-6, and was ahead 3-0 in the second at the time of the retirement.

UP NEXT
After being away from home for the last 17 matches dating back to February 10, the Warriors will play their 18th and final regular season road affair on Tuesday, April 4, when they battle at Hillsdale.  The match is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. from the Margot V. Biermann Center.
