Men's Basketball Holds On at Tiffin for 70-68 Win

Four Warriors scored in double-figures, paced by 18 from Chuck Key.

TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (6-1, 3-0 GLIAC) stayed unbeaten in league play, winning 70-68 at Tiffin (3-6, 0-3 GLIAC) on Thursday night, extending its winning streak to six games.  WSU led by as many as nine points in the second half but a late 8-2 run by TU made things interesting down the stretch.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tiffin scored the first six points of the contest, forcing head coach David Greer to take an early timeout at the 18:42 mark.  However, a jump shot from Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) tied the game at 6-6 one minute later.  Nick Mutebi (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Univ. of Detroit Jesuit) gave the Warriors a 13-7 lead with a three-point play.  The Warriors led 19-17 with 9:32 remaining in the opening period.  Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) kept WSU on top, 26-21 with a jumper at the 6:23 mark.  TU tied the game at 33-33 with a jumper before the half came to a close.

• The Dragons scored the first two points of the second half, taking a 35-33 lead at the 19:41 mark.  Two Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) free throws at the 17-minute mark put the Green & Gold up 40-38.  Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) connected from behind the arc to give WSU a 47-42 advantage with 12:34 left to play.  A jumper from Mutebi at the 8:38 mark gave WSU its largest lead of the night, 57-48. A dunk from Tiffin's Juwan Johnson trimmed WSU's lead to four at 63-59 with just over four minutes left on the clock.  A missed free throw by Moore led to a layup by the Dragons to cut the deficit to one 69-68 with six second to play.  Booth knocked down one of two free throws and an Alex Brown jumper drew only iron to give the Warriors a two-point win, 70-68, as the clock hit zeros.

WINNING STREAK
• The six straight victories is the longest winning streak for WSU since a seven-game streak during the 2012-13 season.

MULTIPLE SCORING THREATS
• On any given night, one of several Warriors can be the go-to scorer.  For the second straight game it was Key who finished with 18 points.  Spencer tallied a career-high 15 points, while Moore contributed 12 and Mutebi posted a career-best scoring night with 10 points.

UP NEXT
• The Warriors will complete the road trip at Ashland on Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m.
