Men’s Tennis Drops 5-4 Decision At Aquinas College

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Wayne State men's tennis team's winning streak was halted at seven games on Thursday when Aquinas College defeated WSU 5-4 for its second win in two years over the Warriors (10-4, 3-0 GLIAC).

WSU got off to uncharacteristic tough start in doubles play as the Warriors dropped two of the three matches. Thursday marked just the third time in Wayne State's last nine contests that it has lost two or more doubles bouts.

Bertrand Moulin and Britton Steele picked up their 10th win of the season with an 8-5 win over Tuan-anh Tran and Kyle Masteller. WSU's No. 1 team now has a record of 10-2.

WSU's Thomas Ducret and Eric Szydlowski dropped a tough 8-6 decision at No. 2 doubles to Travis Wolf and Victor Roland while Oscar Gamarra and Kevin Turnbull fell 8-2 against Aquinas' Michael Sendor and Dan Doerrfeld.

Two of Wayne State's three victories in singles play were close three-set decisions with Ducret earning a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 win over Wolf from the third flight with Jon Groszek also pulling off a come-from behind triumph vs. Doerrfeld at No. 6 singles 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Moulin also continued to roll from Wayne State's top spot with a 6-3, 6-4 besting of Tran.

Steele (7-6, 6-4), Gamarra (6-2, 7-6) and Roberto Gomez (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) all lost close matches from the second, fourth and fifth flights respectively.

Wayne State will look to maintain its perfect record in the GLIAC Friday morning at Grand Valley. Play is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
