Kinch's Career Day Leads Baseball to Saturday Split

The Warriors won game one 3-1 and dropped game two 9-8.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (22-19, 14-10 GLIAC) split with Findlay (14-23, 7-15 GLIAC) on Saturday.  Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (6-4) held the Oilers to just two hits to help WSU win game one 3-1.  However, UF responded with a 9-8 victory in the second contest.

GAME ONE vs. FINDLAY (W, 3-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Kinch started fast with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first.  After three straight singles from Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic), Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) and JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.). Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) was hit by a pitch to give WSU a 1-0 advantage.  Kinch struck out three batters to negate a walk and a stolen base in the second inning.

- An error, a stolen base and a walk led to a run scoring on an Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) groundout in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Baldwin extended the home lead to 3-0 with an RBI single to right field.

- The Oilers used a hit, a wild pitch and a fielding error to get on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Kinch struck out the first two batters of the seventh inning and got the final batter to ground out to secure his ninth career complete game.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Baldwin was the only player in the game with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

ON THE MOUND
- Kinch was nearly untouchable, striking out a career-high 12 batters in seven innings.  He allowed an unearned run and walked one batter.

GAME TWO vs. FINDLAY (L, 8-9)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Warriors scored first in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run from Conti, his second of the season.  A sacrifice fly from Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) later in the inning gave the Green & Gold a 2-0 lead.  Findlay scored three runs on four hits in the top of the third to take the lead. A two-run double from Derrick Herd delivered the most damage.  A wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning allowed Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) to score before Loconsole's RBI groundout gave WSU the 4-3 lead.

- The Oilers tied the game at 4-4 with a run scoring on a passed ball in the top of the sixth inning.  Two walks and a single loaded the bases for the visitors in the top of the seventh inning.  UF's Peter Yorgen was plunked leading to a run, breaking the tie.  The Oilers added four runs on five hits and a Warrior error in the top of the eighth inning to take a 9-4 advantage heading towards the final innings.

- A three-run double from Mergener in the bottom of the eighth narrowed the gap to two and a Baldwin RBI groundout pulled WSU within one, 9-8.  However, the Warriors would go down in order in the bottom of the ninth to suffer their fifth home loss of 2016.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Baldwin, Winkelseth and Mergener all posted two-hit performances, while Mergener accounted for four of the seven RBI.

ON THE MOUND
- WSU used four pitchers beginning with Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) who lasted five and 2/3 innings and struck out five batters, while allowing three earned runs on nine hits.
- Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio) (2-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing an earned run in 2/3 of an inning.
- Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) and Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) combined for the final two and 2/3 innings allowing four unearned runs between them.

UP NEXT
- Findlay and Wayne State will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
