Grand Valley State Rolls Through Walsh, 16-1

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Grand Valley State women's lacrosse captured their third win in four days as they won a decisive 16-1 contest over Walsh in conference play. The Lakers improve to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC, while the Cavaliers drop to 3-7 overall and 0-2 against conference opponents.
 
Ryan Skomial led the Lakers in scoring with three goals, while Zoe Stiemann contributed two goals and an assist. Sarah Lowe and Kira Dosenberry each tallied two assists, while 11 different players scored one point. Lowe scooped up a team-leading five ground balls, while Skomial pulled in three draw controls and Stiemann and Kerrigan Baird lead the team in caused turnovers with two each. In goal, Sarah Zwilsky won her seventh game of the year, making one save in 60 minutes between the pipes.
 
The opening goal by Victoria Devine at 29:49 broke the record for the fastest goal in program history, besting the previous record set in 2012 by one second. From there, it was all Grand Valley State as they scored nine goals in the first eight minutes. Devine also dished out an assist to Stiemann, and Carolyn Kraus found the back of the net off a pass from Erika Neumen. Lowe's unassisted goal at 19:30, Baird's goal off a pass from Dosenberry at 12:00, and then scores by Chelsey Bishop at 8:52, Kallie Lavalle at 4:16 and Skomial at 1: 35 gave GVSU an 11-0 lead going into halftime.
 
Dosenberry assisted on Skomial's third goal of the afternoon four minutes into the start of the second half. Stiemann connected with Meggan Loyd only two minutes later, giving the freshman her second goal in two games and fourth point in three contests. Fellow first-year player Maria D'Angelo notched her first goal off a feed by Baird, and Lowe helped Nicki Tague tickle the twine. A free-position goal by Bailey Ellsworth, with a player advantage, gave the Lakers a 16-0 lead. They were only 32 seconds away from back-to-back shutouts when Sarah McCormick put one in the back of the net to give Walsh their only goal of the game, and the final score of the contest.
 
Grand Valley State took 27 shots while limiting the Cavaliers to just three. The Lakers also held an advantage over their opponents in ground balls (22-15), draw controls (15-4), and turnovers (13-19). They also limited the Cavaliers to going just 5-17 on clears while going 2-3 themselves.
 
GVSU returns to the field on Friday (Apr. 10) when they complete their road stand against Ursuline (0-6, 0-1 GLIAC) at 5 p.m. The Lakers then host four consecutive games at GVSU Laker Lacrosse/Track & Field Stadium, beginning with McKendree (9-1, 2-0 GLIAC) on Sunday (Apr. 12) at noon.
