Baseball Cruises to Doubleheader Sweep

Wayne State Outscored Lake Erie 21-8 on Saturday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (17-14, 9-5 GLIAC) needed to right the ship after dropping four of its last five games and the Warriors did just that on Saturday.  WSU swept Lake Erie (9-20, 5-9 GLIAC) by scores of 10-5 and 11-3.

GAME ONE vs. LAKE ERIE (W, 10-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Warriors struck first with two runs on a hit and an error in the bottom of the second inning.  The offense extended the lead to 6-0 with four runs on three hits and another LEC error in the bottom of the third inning.  Randy Kuzdak (Redford, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) highlighted the inning with a two-run double to left center.  Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (5-3) set down the side in order in the top of the fourth inning to keep the Storm off the board.

- Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) hit the first of two home runs on the day in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Lake Erie charged back with five runs on four hits and a WSU error in the top of the fifth inning.  However, a three-run bomb from Daniel Peake (Mississauga, Ont.) in the bottom of the sixth inning would help the Green & Gold regain control and secure the victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Harms, Peake and Kuzdak all finished with two hits each, while Peake and Kuzdak powered the offense with three RBI apiece.

ON THE MOUND
- Kinch was good enough, earning the victory by striking out nine over six innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits and two walks.
- Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) finished the game on the mound and did not allow a run in his inning of work.  He allowed one hit, while striking out one batter.

GAME TWO vs. LAKE ERIE (W, 11-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- A two RBI single off the bat of JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) put WSU up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning.  Harms doubled home a run in the bottom of the second inning and the Warriors exploded for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning.  Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Stevenson) delivered the most damage with a two-run single through the left side to give WSU an 8-0 advantage.

- Freshman starter Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) (2-1) continued to gain momentum as the game progressed, flashing no-hit stuff.  He set down the side in order in the top of the fourth inning and was able to dance around two walks in the top of the fifth inning to keep LEC scoreless.  A run scored for the Storm in the top of the sixth inning via a throwing error but Lake Erie was still searching for its first base hit.  Harms crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Warriors up 9-1.

- LEC's Kody Bledsoe took the first pitch of the seventh inning from Pawelek out to left field for a solo home run, breaking up the no-hit bid.  The Storm added another run in the frame to trim the deficit to 9-3.  Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning and Harms doubled home WSU's 11th run of the game later in the inning.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Harms finished 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
- Conti an d Jorah drove in two runs each.

ON THE MOUND
- Pawelek pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs on one hit and four walks.  He struck out six batters.
- Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) was impressive in his two innings of work, striking out three batters.
- Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) struck out one and did not allow a base runner in his inning of action.

UP NEXT
- WSU will go the four-game sweep over Lake Erie on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
