SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Wayne State University men's tennis team (0-1 overall) competed in its first dual match of the 2018 season Friday, falling 6-1 to host Detroit Mercy at the Franklin Racquet Club.
Junior
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) earned the lone point for the Warriors, getting a 7-5, 6-2 win over Nathan Ponton.
DOUBLES RESULTS
Sophomore
Mats Westkamp (Bonn, Germany) and Vane played at the first flight, falling to Ponton and Artem Vasheshnikov, 6-2. Wayne State earned a win in the No. 2 doubles spot, as junior
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and senior
Harvey Reed (Winchester, Hampshire, England) paired to defeat Alvaro Arce and Kadyron, 6-2. In third doubles slot, sophomore
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) and freshman
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) fell 6-3 to Gvidas Motuzas and Adam Zychowicz.
SINGLES RESULTS
Westkamp competed in the first flight, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Vasheshnikov. Mertz battled Luka Soskic to a 6-4, 6-3 result at No. 2.
Reed took Arce to three sets, ultimately succumbing 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 in the third flight.
Sammons and sophomore
Jason Potter (Sterling Heights, Mich. / International Academy East) played in the fifth and sixth flights, respectively. Sammons battled Zychowicz to a 6-3, 6-2 defeat, while Potter fell 6-4, 6-3 to Motuzas.

The Warriors will return to Southfield's Franklin Racquet Club on Wednesday, playing visitor once again in dual match-up against Lawrence Tech. First serve is slated for noon.
