The University of Findlay baseball team dropped a pair of games to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe, the Wayne State University Warriors. The games, held at Findlay's Fifth Third Field, ended with scores of 5-2 in Game 1 and 6-2 in Game 2. The losses drop the Oilers to 8-18 overall with a 5-11 mark in conference play.
Game 1:
In the first contest, the Oilers were plagued by errors and a lack of timely hitting as they lost by a final of 5-2.
Wayne State jumped out to a five-run lead, scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings and three runs in the fifth. On the defensive side of the ball, errors were made by Findlay in the third and fifth, each of which led to a run.
The Oilers runs came in the bottom of the fifth as the inning began with a walk to Michael Louis. The next batter, Tyler Donaldson, carried the wall in deep right field for his first home run of the season, pulling Findlay to within three runs at 5-2. That inning saw two more hits but a pair of runners were stranded as the frame ended with a strikeout.
In the game, the Oilers scored two runs on five hits, made three errors and stranded nine.
Drew Hargrove toed the rubber for Findlay and went the distance. He allowed five runs, three earned, on 11 hits. He did not record a walk or strikeout.
Donaldson picked up the only RBI of the day with his two-run bomb.
Game 2:
For Findlay, the offense did not improve in Game 2 as Wayne State starter Chris Horvath set down the first 11 hitters he faced and took a no-hitter into the sixth.
The Warriors scored in the first, third, fourth, and seventh for a total of six runs.
The Oilers two runs came in the bottom of the sixth with Louis leading off with a single and reaching second on a error by the shortstop. Chase Goulette and Donaldson walked to end Horvath's day. With one out and the bases loaded, Reid Rothenbuhler watched four balls go by for the free pass that brought in a run. The scoring ended with a fielder's choice groundout by Derek Draper. The run made the score 4-2 at the time, but the Warriors scored two more in the subsequent half-inning, making the score 6-2, the eventual final.
Findlay scored two runs on one hit. They made one error and left three runners on base.
Mason Mayberry took the loss on the bump as he went 3.1 innings and allowed four runs on two hits. He walked three and struck out two.
The Oilers begin a 12-game road trip this weekend, as they play a GLIAC series vs. Ohio Dominican in Columbus, OH. The first game is set to begin Saturday, April 12 at 1:00pm.
