AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (8-7) was unable to overcome a four-run third inning by Seton Hill (9-5) on Thursday afternoon as the Warriors fell 7-3. The Warriors are playing in the RussMatt Invitational for their annual Spring Break trip to Florida.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Griffins scored four runs on five hits and a Wayne State error in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Back-to-back doubles from
Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) and
Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) in the bottom of the fourth inning produced WSU's first run of the contest.
- Seton Hill added a run in the top of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly. The Warriors were able to get that run back as
Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) homered to left center in the bottom of the fifth inning. The scoring slowed over the new couple of innings until SHU scored two runs on three hits in the top of the eight inning to extend its lead to 7-2.
- It appeared WSU was ready to storm back to begin the bottom of the eight as Mergener tripled to left field and
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) reached via a ht by pitch. However, the only offense that the Green & Gold could produce was a sacrifice fly to right from
Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle).
Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) began the ninth inning with a double but the next three batters would go down in order to end the game.
ON THE MOUND
-
Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) (0-2) started and allowed four runs on six hits, while striking out four batters.
Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) tossed a scoreless fourth inning and
Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) pitched three and a 1/3 innings in collegiate debut, allowing two earned runs.
Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) finished the game and did not allow a run in an inning and 2/3.
UP NEXT
- The Warriors will begin conference play about 1,300 miles away from the GLIAC headquarters (Bay City, Mich.) with a doubleheader against Ohio Dominican on Saturday. First pitch is schedule for 10 a.m.
