Men's Hoops Drops Tight Game with Ashland

The Warriors outscored the Eagles 44-40 in the second half.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (5-17, 5-14 GLIAC) fell to Ashland (17-8, 11-8 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon, 68-67. The Warriors outscored the Eagles 44-40 in the second half but could not overcome its cold-shooting in the first half.

The 2015 Hall of Fame Class was honored during halftime in front of the Matthaei crowd as President M. Roy Wilson and Director of Athletics Rob Fournier prsented each member with their Hall of Fame gifts.

Gavin Toma (Troy, Mich. / Southfield Christian) began the scoring with a three-pointer at the 19:16 mark. An 8-0 Ashland run gave the Eagles a 15-9 advantage with 11:15 left in the half.

WSU trimmed the deficit to three, 20-17, at the 8:11 mark after two free throws from Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron). Two more free throws from Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) pulled WSU within one, 22-21 with 6:27 remaining.

Ashland regained control and led at the break, 28-23. Toma led all scorers with six points at halftime but WSU only shot 26.9 percent (7-26) while Ashland shot 47.9 percent (9-19) from the floor during the first 20 minutes.

The Eagles scored the first five points of the second half to extend their lead to 34-23 with 18:56 left in the contest. Ashland continued to pull away and led 42-29 with 15 minutes remaining.

Adrian Cook gave Ashland a 17-point lead with a layup at the 13:16 mark.

A Toma three-pointer cut the visitors' lead to 10, 57-47, at the 6:12 mark. Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) kept WSU in the game with two free throws to trim deficit to six with just under four minutes to play.Boo Osborne connected from deep to give AU some breathing room at 63-55 at the two-minute mark.Two more free throws from Bishop kept WSU within three, 63-60, with one minute left in the game.

Chuck Key's (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) layup put the deficit at two with 27 seconds left to play. Ashland made four three throws down the stretch to make a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer from Bishop a non-factor with the four-point deficit.

Toma finished with a game-high 22 points including four triples and grabbed seven rebounds while Bishop scored 13 points and Moore chipped in 10. Wendell Davis led the Eagles with 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Warriors will play their final home game on Thursday against Malone, Daniel Ball and DeMarius Miller will be recognized prior to the game as part of Senior Night. In addition, the game can bee seen on Comcast 900.
