Women's Basketball Dispatches Davenport, 70-56

The Warriors continue GLIAC play on Saturday at #15-Grand Valley State.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (4-4 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) earned a 70-56 road league win at Davenport (3-6 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) made her first collegiate start, scoring the first two points for the Warriors.  Junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) connected from beyond the arc to put WSU ahead 5-2 at the 8:33 mark.  Freshman Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) made a layup, followed by a three-pointer by freshman Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) which extended the lead to 10-2 with 7:11 on the clock.  Miller was the next to tally a triple at 5:39, but DU's Amanda Merz responded with a three-pointer.  George connected on two free throws, extending the Warriors lead to 15-5.  After a scoring drought of just over two minutes, Matus drilled another triple with 2:44 left in the opening quarter to put the visitors on top 18-5.  Senior India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) made a layup with 2:06 left in the first quarter to make it 20-7.  Senior Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich.) scored a last-second bucket to make the score after 10 minutes of action 22-15 in favor of WSU.

WSU continued to control the momentum the entire second stanza.  Junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) tallied two points for the Warriors at the 8:25 mark, giving WSU a 24-16 advantage.  After the Panthers' Taylor Opolka made a jumper two minutes later, George responded with a layup, giving the Green & Gold a 26-18 lead.  Villemure was the next to score a bucket with 5:07 to play before halftime, extending the lead to 28-18.  A three-pointer by senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) pushed the Warrior advantage to 11 (31-20).  George helped WSU at the 2:28 mark by recording her first career triple, followed by a layup a minute later to make it 37-20.  Cherney scored the final points of the half to make it 39-22 at intermission.

After Cherney snagged a board at the 8:15 mark in the third stanza, George made a layup that pushed the Warriors lead to 41-22.  Williams kept things rolling for WSU with a trey, extending the margin to 44-25.  Less than a minute later, Matus connected on another triple.  The Warriors had a two-minute scoring drought, but Matus connected again from deep at the 4:01 mark, giving the Warriors a 20-point advantage at 51-31.  Williams triple with 2:22 on the clock extended the lead to 54-33.  After three periods, the Warriors led 54-39.

George scored two points for the Green & Gold within the first 30 seconds of the final stanza to give the Warriors a 56-39 lead.  Following a pair of free throws by George, Williams scored for WSU at 6:09 to make it 60-41.  After not scoring for three minutes, George came back with a jumper after the Panthers started to close the gap at 62-50.  Miller extended the lead with a triple at 1:59 mark and connected on two free throws a minute later.  Matus sealed the deal for the Warriors with a three-pointer with 21 seconds left to play.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
George nearly had a double-double after a career-high (and game-high) 19 points and nine rebounds.  Also scoring in double figures were Matus (15 points and four assists), Williams (11 points, six rebounds, and six assists) and Miller (10 points, six assists, and four rebounds).  Cherney snagged a game-best 11 rebounds.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Toni Grace tallied a team-high 11 points for Davenport, while Natalie Tucker and Opolka scored nine points each.  Opolka also grabbed a team-best eight boards.

TEAM STATS
WSU shot 45 percent (25-of-56) from the floor, while DU finished at 33 percent (19-of-58).  The Warriors connected on 39 percent (12-of-31) of shots taken from beyond the arc, while the Panthers posted a 27 percent performance (6-of-22) in their attempted triples.  Wayne State snagged 42 total rebounds, while Davenport notched 34 boards.
