HARMARVILLE, Pa. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (22-1) entered the weekend ranked ranked second in the region and 27th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Warriors looked to improve those rankings against West Liberty (12-6) on Saturday. The Warriors swept the Hilltoppers 9-0.
WSU earned victories at all three flights doubles. The senior combo of
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que.) improved to 22-3 this season with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. The duo is ranked 18th in the country and second in the region.
Junior
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que.) and freshman
Liz de Souza Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles while sophomores
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win at the third flight of doubles.
Moore, ranked 49th in the country and fourth in the region, won at No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-3) to improve to 19-5 on the season. Mitrache won in straight sets at No. 2 singles while Poissant topped her counterpart at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-1.
Briand improved her season record to 21-4 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. Kamenko collected her team-high 23rd singles victory at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-2.
Ghellere completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 at the final flight of singles.
WSU will meet California (Pa.) on Sunday at noon in South Park Twp., Pa.
