DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team concluded its three-game exhibition schedule with a 76-39 triumph over Lawrence Tech Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) and
Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich) scored 15 and 13 points, respectively to pace the Warriors offensive attack. Junior
Kayla Bridges (Canton, Mich.) added eight points and a team-best seven rebounds as Wayne State held a 49-36 edge on the boards.
WSU sophomore guard
Kristen Long () scored the first five points of the game and a three-pointer and a pair of foul shots. The Blue Devils answered with four straight points before the Warriors went on an 11-0 run in just under four minutes. Lavita-Stephens had six points during the spurt with Brown tallying the other five points giving the hosts a 16-4 advantage.
Wayne State's lead was never fewer than eight.
WSU shot 44 percent (15-of-34) during the opening 20 minutes but LTU was 12-of-26 for 46 percent limiting the hosts lead to 12 (37-25). The Warriors forced 17 first-half miscues leading to a 15-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
In the first eight minutes of the second half, WSU had a 21-3 scoring advantage to open up a 28-point lead (56-28). Freshman
Rachel Ruzevich (Orland Park, Ill. / Carl Sandburg) had five points as did Lavita-Stephens with Brown adding four more.
The Warrior defense held the Blue Devils to just 17 percent (4-of-23) in the second half and out-scored the visitors 39-14 over the final 20 minutes.
Wayne State totaled 13 assists to 12 turnovers, while Lawrence Tech had 28 turnovers.
WSU begins its regular-season schedule at home on Sunday, Nov. 17 with a 2 p.m. contest against California (Pa.).
