NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (10-10, 5-9 GLIAC) upset Walsh (12-7, 9-5 GLIAC), 72-66 on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers entered the weekend tied for the second seed with Ohio Dominican in the GLIAC South Division.
Walsh led 6-4 early in the first quarter but WSU would take an 8-6 lead at the 6:45 mark and the Warriors would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
HOW IT HAPPENED-
Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) gave WSU an early lead, 8-6, with a layup at the 6:45 mark.
Kristen Long (Durand, Mich.) knocked down a jumper at the five-minute mark to extend the lead to 13-8.
India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) pushed the lead to double digits (23-13) with a basket with 48 seconds left to play. Two points from
Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.) at the end of the opening quarter put the Warriors on top, 25-13.
- The first basket of the second quarter went to WU's Holly Grober at the 7:49 mark to put the deficit back to 10. However,
Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills), Birchmeier and Streetman responded with three straight triples to stake WSU to a 14-point lead (34-20). A three-point play from
Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich. / Northern) kept the momentum with the Green & Gold and extended the lead to 37-20 at the 4:40 mark.
Ashley Wilson beat the first-half buzzer with a bucket to make the halftime score 41-27.
- An
Ashley Wilson layup at the 6:44 mark of the third quarter kept WSU in control, 46-32. Brooklyn Wooten's jumper from behind the arc cut the deficit to 10 (49-39) with 3:21 left to play in the period. The Cavaliers ended the third quarter on a 10-2 run to trail 51-46 with 10 minutes to play. Walsh outscored Wayne State 19-10 in the quarter.
- Two free throws from Kelsey Funderburgh brought Walsh within three (53-50) at the eight-minute mark.
Shannon Wilson connected on back-to-back three-pointers to extend WSU's lead to 59-50. The Cavs would not get closer than four points until the 53-second mark when two more Funderburgh free throws cut deficit to 66-64. A clutch layup from Hawkins made it a two-possession game and the Warriors would convert its final four free throw attempts to win 72-66.
LEADING THE WARRIORS-
Shannon Wilson collected a career-high in points for the third time in four games with 29 points on 9-of-10 shooting, including five triples.
- Streetman finished with 12 points, while both
Ashley Wilson and Hawkins chipped in 11. Hawkins also dished out a career-high six assists.
LEADING THE CAVALIERS- Funderburgh scored 28 points in the loss, while Grober tallied 12 points and Wooten finished with 10 points.
UP NEXT- Wayne State will look for its third consecutive win at Findlay on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
