Women's Hoops Upended At Grand Valley State

Warriors shoot a season-low 25 percent.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (6-5 overall, 1-4 GLIAC) suffered a 74-39 setback at Grand Valley State University (8-3 overall, 3-2 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon as GLIAC play resumed for all 16 league members.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Laker Kayla Dawson scored on the game's opening possession before WSU took its only lead of the contest (3-2) on the first triple of the campaign by sophomore Nina Foster (Lansing, Mich. / Everett).  A lay-up by GVSU's Taylor Lutz on the ensuing possession started a 9-0 run by the hosts.

Senior guard Kristen Long (Durand, Mich.) drained a three-pointer to end the Laker spurt and make it 11-6.  Two minutes later a driving lay-up by senior forward Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich. / Northern) cut the Warrior deficit to three (11-8).

After GVSU's Taylor Parmley split a pair from the charity stripe, freshman guard India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison) scored from inside but the Lakers would end the opening stanza on an 8-2 run to lead 20-12 after 10 minutes.

Junior forward Christina Green (Southfield, Mich. / Lathrup) scored on the first possession of the second quarter, but Grand Valley State scored five straight points before a triple from senior guard Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) pulled the Warriors within eight (25-17) at the 6:44 mark.  GVSU tallied the next nine points and the Warriors would trail by double digits the rest of the match.

Wayne State trailed 42-21 at halftime and was out-scored 18-11 in the third quarter and 14-7 in the final period.

WSU LEADERS
Long led Wayne State with seven points, while Green, Long and sophomore Tori Bellamy (Davison, Mich.) each pulled down four boards.

TEAM STATS RECAP
