ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (6-5 overall, 1-4 GLIAC) suffered a 74-39 setback at Grand Valley State University (8-3 overall, 3-2 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon as GLIAC play resumed for all 16 league members.
HOW IT HAPPENEDLaker Kayla Dawson scored on the game's opening possession before WSU took its only lead of the contest (3-2) on the first triple of the campaign by sophomore
Nina Foster (Lansing, Mich. / Everett). A lay-up by GVSU's Taylor Lutz on the ensuing possession started a 9-0 run by the hosts.
Senior guard
Kristen Long (Durand, Mich.) drained a three-pointer to end the Laker spurt and make it 11-6. Two minutes later a driving lay-up by senior forward
Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich. / Northern) cut the Warrior deficit to three (11-8).
After GVSU's Taylor Parmley split a pair from the charity stripe, freshman guard
India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison) scored from inside but the Lakers would end the opening stanza on an 8-2 run to lead 20-12 after 10 minutes.
Junior forward
Christina Green (Southfield, Mich. / Lathrup) scored on the first possession of the second quarter, but Grand Valley State scored five straight points before a triple from senior guard
Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) pulled the Warriors within eight (25-17) at the 6:44 mark. GVSU tallied the next nine points and the Warriors would trail by double digits the rest of the match.
Wayne State trailed 42-21 at halftime and was out-scored 18-11 in the third quarter and 14-7 in the final period.
WSU LEADERSLong led Wayne State with seven points, while Green, Long and sophomore
Tori Bellamy (Davison, Mich.) each pulled down four boards.
TEAM STATS RECAPThe Warriors were limited to a season-low 25 percent (15-of-59) from the floor, while Grand Valley State shot 39 percent (26-of-66). GVSU held a 27 percent (8-of-30) to WSU's 21 percent (4-of-19) edge from beyond the arc. The Lakers also led in free throw percentage (88 percent / 14-of-16) to Wayne State's 50 percent (5-of-10). Grand Valley State had a 48-37 margin in rebounding and only committed eight miscues compared to WSU's 17 turnovers.

LEADING THE OPPOSITIONBailey Cairnduff totaled a game-high 18 points, including four made triples, to lead three Lakers in double figures. Dawson chipped in with 16 points, while Piper Tucker added 13 points. Parmley had a game-high nine rebounds.
UP NEXTWayne State will conclude its road trip with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday at Ferris State. The Warriors return to the Matthaei on Jan. 7 to start a stretch of six home games in a seven-game span.
