Volleyball Sweeps Northern Michigan

The Warriors won by scores of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-22.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (10-7 overall, 5-4 GLIAC) rebounded with a three-set victory on Saturday afternoon against Northern Michigan (10-7 overall, 2-7 GLIAC) inside the Matthaei.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors seized the momentum early in the match, leading 7-2 after a kill from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) to force an NMU timeout.  A Wildcats attacking error pushed the home advantage to 11-2.  Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) extended the lead to 17-8 and the Green & Gold would go on to win 25-11.

Wayne State continued to play well and led 9-5 midway through the second set.  A point from Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.) gave the Warriors a 15-10 lead and WSU would go on to lead 19-11 after another point from Malewicz.  A service ace from Malewicz gave Wayne State a 21-13 lead as WSU would win 25-19 on a block by Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) and Frazee.

WSU opened the third set leading 6-4 and eventually 9-7 following a combo block by Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and Fike.  Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) got into the action with a kill to put the Warriors on top 14-11.  The Wildcats led 17-16 but the Green & Gold would answer by winning seven of the next 10 points, taking a 23-20 lead.  Richardson sealed the sweep with a kill, giving WSU a 25-22 set-three victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Richardson led Wayne State offensively with 11 kills, while Malewicz contributed eight.  Duffield finished with 27 assists and Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) led the defense with 23 digs.
