Winter Haven, Fla. -- The eighth-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (18-3 overall) recorded another win over a top 25 team with a 5-0 triumph over No. 18 Caldwell Friday morning as part of the Rebel Spring Games.
Junior pitcher
Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) struck out 10 and notched her fourth solo shutout (sixth total) of the campaign and improved to 9-0 on the season.
Besides controlling the contest from the circle, Lee also doubled and homered against the Cougars.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as
Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova College) worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lee.Â
Devin Hentschel (Wyoming, Mich. / Rogers) had a sacrifice bunt as well with Ingratta scoring on a throwing error.
WSU added a run in the fourth on a one-out home run by Lee, her first four-bagger of the season.
Wayne State extended its lead with a trio of run in the sixth.Â
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.) reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams). A single by Ingratta plated Butler, while Lee followed with an RBI double scored Ingratta. Pinch-runner
Catherine Rayos (Warren, Mich. / Mott) stole third then scored on a single by
Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth).
Caldwell have five runners reach second base but none were able to advance to third.
Lee was the only Warrior with a multiple-hit affair.
