KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Wayne State University men's tennis team (8-9 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) were defeated in the final non-conference match of the season Tuesday, falling 6-1 to host Western Michigan (16-4 overall, 3-0 MAC).
Sophomore
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) scored the lone point for the Green & Gold, winning at the fifth singles flight. He defeated Matej Svjetlicic, 6-4, 6-4.
DOUBLES RESULTS
Playing Division I doubles rules, the Broncos clinched the pairs point thanks to wins at the first and second flights.
At No. 1 doubles, juniors
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) and
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) lost 6-2 to Jannik Opitz and Kennosuke Nouchi.
In the second flight, senior
Harvey Reed (Winchester, England) and Sammons lost 6-0 to Billy Heckman and Maik Steiner.
Freshman
Niklas Karcz and sophomore
Jason Potter (Sterling Heights, Mich. / International Academy East) were defeated 6-3 at the hands of Lanhard Haupt and Kris Knof.
SINGLES RESULTS
Vane played the first flight, falling 6-4, 6-3 to Opitz.
Karcz lost to Nouchi at No. 2, 6-1, 6-4.
Mertz battled Haupt in the third flight, losing 6-4, 6-3.
In the fourth flight, Reed took on Eric Olivarez, but was defeated in three sets (6-0, 4-6, 6-2).
In the final flight, Potter fell 6-1, 6-2 to WMU's Zac Faveri.
UP NEXT
With non-conference play in the books, Wayne State will return to conference action on Saturday. The Warriors will travel to Tiffin for the final regular season meeting as a conference foe with the Dragons.
