ORLANDO, Fla. – The Wayne State University men's tennis team (6-3 overall) fell in its first spring break match on Thursday, dropping a 6-1 decision to Division I opponent James Madison in a neutral site contest.
Freshman
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) was WSU's lone winner. He earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over JMU's Pierre Kohler in the fourth singles flight.
DOUBLES RESULTS
James Madison swept the doubles flights, earning a single point due to Division I rules. In the first flight, sophomore
Mats Westkamp (Bonn, Germany) and junior
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) fell to Paul Mendoza and Theophila Lanthiez, 6-2.
In the second flight, senior
Harvey Reed (Winchester, Hampshire, England) and junior
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) lost to Kohler and Alvaro Arce Garcia, 6-1.
Karcz and sophomore
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) payed in the third flight, falling 7-6 to Tate Steinour and Gonzalo Adis Freer.
SINGLES RESULTS
In the first flight, Westkamp was defeated by Mendoza (7-5, 6-4).
At No. 2, Vane lost to Arce Garcia (6-4, 6-4).
Mertz played the third flight, dropping a 6-2, 6-1 decsion to Damon Roberts.
Sammons and sophomore
Jason Potter (Sterling Heights, Mich. / International Academy East) played at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Sammons lost to Adis Freer (6-3, 6-2), while Potter fell 6-1, 6-1 to Lanthiez.
