Hillsdale Sweeps WSU Volleyball

Senior co-captain Kristen Bulkiewicz finished with a match-high 14 kills.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State Volleyball team (8-8, 5-3) was swept by GLIAC rival Hillsdale (8-8, 5-3) on Friday night inside the Matthaei Center. The Warriors did not score more than 19 points in any of the three sets and hit just .038 for the match. Hillsdale took all three sets beginning with set one 25-17, set two 25-19 and set three 25-19.

Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) finished with a match-high 14 kills. The Chargers hit .158 and collected 10 total team blocks and were paced by an evenly-distributed offensive attack led by eight kills from Jen Bearman.

Hillsdale took a 6-3 lead on a set error to open the match. The Chargers would extend lead to 13-8 and eventually led 19-15. Wayne State would get as close as two points but the Chargers took the final four points to win 25-17.

Wayne State started set two with a 7-6 lead. Bulkiewicz connected on a kill to stretch the Warrior lead to 13-11. A 4-0 HC run gave the visitors an 18-14 lead. The Chargers would control the final points and take the set 25-19 and a 2-0 match lead.

The Green & Gold started fast in the third set and led 4-1 on a Charger attack error. The Chargers took the next five points and did not look back. Hillsdale led 14-11, 18-16 and would eventually take the set 25-19 and the match three games to zero.

Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon) collected 28 assists while Macy Steenhuysen (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Kentwood) led the defense with 10 digs.

WSU will stay in Midtown for a Saturday match against Northwood at 2 PM.
