Southfield, Mich. – The Wayne State men's tennis team got off to a slow start Friday night as Detroit Mercy defeated the Warriors
6-1. Freshman
Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) earned WSU's lone point.
Detroit earned its first point by winning two of the three doubles matches when the Titans' team of Pjotrs Necajevs/Alex Latosinsky beat WSU's pairing of senior
Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren De La Salle) and freshman
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) 8-1 with Patrick Troy and Cesar Serrano also upending graduate student
Britton Steele (Novi, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and junior
Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) 8-4 in the second match.
The Warriors did pick up a doubles win in the third match when sophomore
Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France) and Gamarra bested Detroit's David Stabley and Christopher Cheung 8-5.
Moulin, Steele, Turnbull and Ducret all suffered straight-set losses in the first, second, third and fourth singles flights to give Detroit a commanding 5-0 lead.
The closest match of the day came in the No. 5 singles battle between Szydlowski and Titan's Nick Tolome. Szydlowski took the first set 6-1, but dropped the next two 6-3 and 10-7 to give UD its sixth point.
The bright point of singles play for Wayne State came when Gamarra earned his first individual win as a Warrior by way of a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Christopher Cheung.
WSU (0-1) will be back in action and looking for its first win of the season next Thursday at Lewis. Play is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m.
