Oilers Earn 5-Set Win in Season Opener

The University of Findlay volleyball team (1-0) earned a 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-12) victory in their season opener vs the Cardinals of William Jewell on Sep. 4 in Liberty, Mo.

Leading the Oilers offense was sophomore Hannah Tong who smashed 19 kills in the five-set victory. Defensively, the outside hitter picked up four blocks. Picking up 11 kills each were sophomore Andrea Roach and redshirt freshman Nickyla Garverick. Roach also picked up three blocks while Garverick collected a team-high seven blocks.

Assisting the offense was 2013 All-GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) honoree, senior Amanda Calhoun. The Oilers setter collected 42 assists, five blocks and 10 digs.

The leading defenders for Findlay were freshman Madelyn McCabe and junior Becca Shoemaker. The duo scrambled for 20 and 14 digs, respectively. Also gathering 14 digs was senior Samantha Granger.

The Oilers will continue their Missouri trip with matches throughout the weekend. Tomorrow, Friday, Sep. 5, Findlay will take on Missouri Western State at noon and Northwest Missouri State at 5 pm.
